Wolf
Description The wolf is a large mammal which belongs in the canine family. In terms of appearance, they look like dogs, have thick fur that allows them to survive in different climates, and their size varies depending on where they live. Wolves can be found in several places in the Northern Hemisphere. They are highly intelligent social creatures that form groups called packs, which are composed of between 6 to 20 individuals. Except when hunting for food, these animals are not aggressive. However, when their pack is threatened by other animals, they can become violent killers as they protect their group. Furthermore, wolves are classified as carnivorous animals, and their diet typically consists of moose, deer, marmots, elks, beavers, and other animals. Until the latter part of the 19th century, wolves are considered a major predator in the North Cascades. Each day, these animals spend approximately 8 to 10 hours moving through their range. Wolves rarely stay in a single place for an extended period of time, and they mark their territory through their urine and scent glands located in their tail.
Status According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, the Red Wolf is classified as Critically Endangered, while the Ethiopian Wolf is listed as Endangered. Meanwhile, the Maned Wolf is categorized as Near Threatened. Some of the major threats to these species include hybridization, loss of habitat, human persecution, and road kills.
