  • Description Bulldog, commonly known as English bulldog or British bulldog, is a small statured medium sized dog, originally bred for a drastic sport called bull baiting. Despite this initial purpose of breeding, bulldog is naturally equable, kind, resolute and courageous. Currently, it is an ideal breed for a family due to its close association with children. Its physical attributes are commonly characterized with wide head and shoulders, thick folds of skin on its brow, short muzzle with skin folds, drooping lips and an under bite with an upturned jaw. Despite its shortness, an adult bulldog averagely weighs 25 kg for males while 23 kg for females. Bulldogs lifespan has an average of 8.4 years and primary reason of mortality are cardiac related, cancer and old age. Due to its very small nasal cavities, it has a great difficulty in keeping its body cool. It is very sensitive to heat and may even die due to hyperthermia. Bulldog is omnivorous in nature but its preference is usually meat. Bulldog does not have specific period for mating but successful breeding happens during a normal heat cycle since this type of breed is very sensitive to heat. Congestion usually takes place for 60 days after breeding, though dog owners and veterinarians nowadays prefer cesarean section process for a successful delivery of its puppies.

Status According to American Kennel Club, bulldogs rank at 4th place for the most popular dog breed. Many groups and even countries use bulldogs as their mascot to signify their strength and courageousness.
