  • Description The American crow is an intelligent bird that can be found all over the United States and Southern Canada. Some of its distinct characteristics include its entirely black glossy feathers, fan-shaped tail, and brown eyes. However, the feathers of young American crows have a brownish tint, and their eyes are grayish in color. Although these birds are frequently mistaken for the raven, American crows are smaller and the shape of their bill is different. Moreover, ravens have pointed tails and wings, and their cries are huskier than the unique loud caw of crows. American crows live in groups, and both males and females build the nest. During the spring or summer season, females lay 4 to 5 eggs on average. When the young crows reach 5 weeks old, they start to learn how to fly and catch their prey. During the winter season, these birds congregate in large groups in locations with huge trees. Crows are categorized as omnivores and their diet normally consists of fruits, insects, nuts, frogs, and other small animals. Since they prefer inhabiting open areas with trees, they are typically found in gardens, parks, and suburban neighborhoods.

Status: According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, the American Crow is categorized as Least Concern, and there are no major threats that affect this species. In fact, the current population trend of the American Crow is increasing.
