  • Description The Coypu, which is also called nutria, is a huge, web-footed, semiaquatic rodent. The coypu looks like a giant rat with a notable thick brown fur and long scaly tail. Although their coat appears shaggy, it has a lush undercoat that is commonly used for producing clothing. Other distinct characteristics of this animal include its four big incisors, as well as its ears, eyes, and nostrils that is located at the higher end of the coypu’s head. They naturally live in Europe, North and South America, as well as Africa. Coypus usually build their nests in wetlands and near lakeshores or riverbanks. As mentioned earlier, they are semiaquatic creatures that have exceptional swimming ability; in fact, they can stay underwater for up to 5 minutes. Coypus are categorized as omnivorous animals and their diet typically consists of plant roots, aquatic plants, mussels, snails, and other tiny creatures. Furthermore, they are considered social creatures that form huge colonies. Every year, a female coypu may give birth to 2 to 3 litters that is composed of 5 to 7 babies each. When baby coypus are born, they only stay with their mother for one to two months.

Status According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, the coypu is categorized as Least Concern. However, in Argentina, this species is classified as critically endangered. One of the threats to this animal’s population is hunting for their fur.
