Description Orcas, which are commonly called killer whales, are characterized for their black and white coloring and long dorsal fin. These huge sea creatures are called as such because they can take down large animals, including whales and sea lions. Other than human beings, orcas are the most widely distributed mammals. They inhabit the seas and oceans that surround various coastal countries and can adapt to any climate. They can live in the cold waters of the North Pole and South Pole, and can also survive in the warm waters close to the equator. However, they prefer to inhabit areas of higher latitudes and coastal regions. Orcas are classified as carnivorous animals and their diet typically consists of seals, walruses, fishes, penguins, sea turtles, sea lions, sharks, squid, and other kinds of whales. On average, this animal consumes approximately 500 pounds of food on a daily basis. The orca’s 3-inch long teeth are suitable for ripping its prey. It doesn’t chew its food and can even swallow smaller sea lions whole. As for larger prey, orcas usually eat it in chunks. The color patterns of these animals serve as their camouflage and allow them to sneak up and attack their prey. Furthermore, orcas may also hunt together in groups called pods.

Status According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature, the population of orcas is unknown. With this, the organization cannot label its status. Some of the major threats that this marine creature face include hunting and water pollution.
