  • Description Goats, which are animals that are closely related to sheep, are native to the mountainous regions of eastern Europe and west Asia. Today, they can be found in many parts of the world and are even considered as pets. Though goats and sheep have a lot of similarities in terms of appearance, one of the differences between the two is that goats have a longer tail compared to sheep. For many years, these animals have been used for their milk, meat, coat, and skin. Aside from that, they have also been used in some countries for transporting heavy loads. In most goat species, males have two horns made out of keratin—the same substance that make up fingernails. Normally, male goats use these to protect themselves against attackers. While horns are more common in males, females in some goat breeds also have these. Depending on their breed, goats may hit puberty when they reach 3 to 15 months old. These creatures are classified as herbivores, and their diet mainly consists of grass and weeds. In addition, some farmers also feed their goats with pellets. While goats are normally found in barren landscapes, they prefer living in mountainous terrains. Furthermore, domesticated goats are also typically raised in farms.

Status The domesticated goat is not evaluated by the International Union for Conservation of Nature, but the Wild Goat is listed as Vulnerable. Some of the major threats to this species include poaching, loss of habitat, and increased food competition with domestic animals.
